Amherst had also introduced a new exercise for all regiments (Bouquet Papers, 21644, 20th Jan. 1759), but what it was I have been unable to discover; though it seems (Haldimand Papers, Add., MS. 21661, 3rd August 1760) that he formed the infantry sometimes in two ranks only, the rear-rank "locking up" to the front.
