He could not tell whether at last there were tears in her voice, or whether she were merely drawing him on to flout him.
“I meant that,” he said coldly.

Certainly there was a queer sound in her voice.
He paused awkwardly.
“There is nothing more, I think?” he said.
“Nothing, thank you.”
