As thou liftest thy hands to the unseen heaven,

God’s mercy imploring! God no mercy will show

To the king whose false pride Zion’s temple laid low.

He casteth thee down among worms which are blind,

Which crawl on their bellies, each after his kind.

With despised and rejected, the sick, the forsworn,

Shalt thou walk, Zedekiah, debased and forlorn,

Consorting with lepers, with halt and with lame,

Among outcasts the poorest. Thus thy pride God shall tame.

With beggars shall harbor; a beggar thyself,
