"Can you put me up for the night?" I asked.
"No; not to-night."
"Why not?"
"We don't take only our own people. There's a place two miles on."
"Two miles through the wet."
"You're right."
"I can pay you what you get from your own people, and a little extra perhaps."
The storekeeper shook his head and answered:
"My wife is a little unwell and does not want the trouble."
