What brought we here to slumber deep in earth?

The living spirit or the soulless clay?

That thing of thought, that seeing, hearing mind,

That living active being first had fled,

And left its husk rejected. This alone

Was hid in earth, to veil it from the sight

Ere severed by corruption, part from part,

And scattered widely to the winds of heaven,

Or cast abroad through earth. Then let not thought

Stop chained below, or buried in the grave,
