The Irish say that fire and salt are the two most sacred things given to man, and if you give them away on May Day you give away your luck for the year.

The fair maid, who, the first of May,
Goes to the fields at break of day,
And washes in dew from the hawthorn tree,
Will ever after handsome be.

It is unlucky to go on the water the first Monday in May.

Irish saying.

Whoever is ill in the month of May,
For the rest of the year will be healthy and gay.
