Mr. Gladstone, in his well-known article, entitled “Kin Beyond Sea,” misquoted the couplet from Heber’s “Palestine.” Instead of the lines,—

“No workman steel, no ponderous hammers rung,

Like some tall palm the stately fabric sprung”—

as incorrectly given by Mr. Gladstone, they should read,—

“No hammer fell, no ponderous axes rung,

Like some tall palm the mystic fabric sprung.”
