Upon the fly-leaf of an old book of sermons, an irreverent wag penned the following comment:
If there should be another flood,
For refuge hither fly;
Though all the world should be submerged,
This book would still be dry.

Many years ago a New England trader wrote this note to a dilatory debtor:
To avoid all proceedings unpleasant
I beg you will pay what is due;
