Epigram on Lovers

Anacreon had not the passion and depth of Sappho, but there is a mark of genuine feeling in some of his poems, as in this simple little epigram:—

“On their hindquarters horses

Are branded oft with fire,

And anyone knows a Parthian

Because he wears a tiar;
