But toyes with God the stateliest[1447] scepters are:

Yet in them to playne doth appeare foreset,

The certayne rule and fatal limittes set,

Yet thinke we not, this sure foresetting fate,

But God’s fast prouidence for ech princely state.

And hath he erst restraind his prouidence?

Or is he nigard of his fre dispence?

Or is he vncertayne foreset driftes to dryue?

That not dame chaunce but he al goodes may giue
