Here is a row of capital letters, and of figures, of ordinary size and shapes:

They are such as are made up of two parts, of similar form. Look carefully at these, and you will perceive that the upper halves of the characters are a very little smaller than the lower halves—so little that, at a mere glance, we should declare them to be of equal size. Now, turn the page upside down, and, without any careful looking, you will see that this difference in size is very much exaggerated—that the real top half of the letter is very much smaller than the other half. It will be seen by this that there is a tendency in the eye to enlarge the upper part of any object upon which it looks. Thus two circles of unequal size might be drawn and so placed that they would appear exactly alike.
