Of course there is sadness in thinking the thought
That there’ll be no more skating for skaters who skaught;
But the Erie Canal, with its decrease in tolls,
Will cause us to smile a succession of smoles.
If “the exigencies of rhyme” need not be considered in constructing English verse, neither need the exigencies of rhythm, as shown by the following highly artistic couplets:
