Where the old Abbey stands, on the Common hard by,
His gibbet is now to be seen;
His irons you still from the road may espy;
The traveller beholds them, and thinks with a sigh
Of poor Mary, the Maid of the Inn.

THE WITCHES' MEETING

1st Witch.When shall we three meet again
In thunder, lightning, or in rain?
2d Witch.When the hurly-burley's done,
When the battle's lost or won:
3d Witch.That will be ere set of sun.
1st Witch.Where the place?
2d Witch.Upon the heath;
3d Witch.There to meet with Macbeth.
1st Witch.I come Grimalkin!
All.Paddock calls:—anon—
Fair is foul, and foul is fair;
Hover through the fog and filthy air.
THE CHARM

1st Witch.Thrice the brinded cat hath mewed.
2d Witch.Thrice: and once the hedgehog whined.
3d Witch.Harpier cries:—'Tis time, 'tis time:
1st Witch.Round about the caldron go:
In the poison'd entrails throw.
Toad, that under the cold stone,
Days and nights hast thirty-one
Swelter'd venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i' the charmed pot!
All.Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and, caldron, bubble.
2d Witch.Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble;
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
All.Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and, caldron, bubble.
3d Witch.Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf;
Witches' mummy; maw and gulf
Of the ravin'd salt sea shark;
Root of hemlock, digged i' the dark;
Liver of blaspheming Jew;
Gall of goat, and slips of yew
Sliver'd in the moon's eclipse;
Nose of Turk, and Tartar's lips;
Add thereto a tiger's chaudron,
For the ingredients of our caldron.
All.Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and, caldron, bubble.
2d Witch.Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.
