CRUTCHES AND CROSSES

Here’s a stiff one, with enough mythology and history in it to keep even the scholars guessing. But the marvellous double interlock and the presence of only four unkeyed letters should help out in the solution. Knacker didn’t care what problems he set himself in this construction.
