51And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cæsar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judæa, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch, of Iturea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2when Annas was high priest and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zachariah, in the wilderness. 3And he came into all the country about the Jordan, preaching the immersion of repentance, unto remission of sins, 4as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

Prepare the way of the Lord,

Make straight his paths.

5Every valley shall be filled,

And every mountain and hill shall be brought low;

And the crooked shall be straight,

And the rough ways smooth;
