4And a great multitude coming together, of those also who came to him out of every city, he spoke by a parable: 5The sower went forth to sow his seed. And as he sowed, one fell by the way-side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. 6And another fell upon the rock; and springing up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7And another fell among the thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8And another fell into the good ground, and sprang up, and bore fruit a hundredfold.
And saying these things, he cried: He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
9And his disciples asked him, what this parable was. 10And he said: To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.
11Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12Those by the way-side are they that hear; after that comes the Devil, and takes away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved. 13Those on the rock are they who, when they hear, with joy receive the word; and these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14And that which fell among the thorns, these are they who have heard, and going forth are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15But that in the good ground, these are they who, in an honest and good heart, having heard, hold fast the word, and bring forth fruit with patience.
16No one, having lighted a lamp, covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed; but puts it on a lamp-stand, that they who enter in may behold the light. 17For nothing is secret that shall not be made manifest, nor hidden, that shall not be known and come abroad. 18Take heed therefore how ye hear. For whoever has, to him shall be given; and whoever has not, even what he seems to have shall be taken from him.
19And his mother and his brothers came to him; and they could not come near him on account of the multitude. 20And it was told him, saying: Thy mother and thy brothers are standing without, desiring to see thee. 21And he answering, said to them: My mother and my brothers are these, who hear and do the word of God.
22And it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples. And he said to them: Let us go over to the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. 23And as they were sailing, he fell asleep. And there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they began to be filled, and were in jeopardy. 24And coming to him, they awoke him, saying: Master, Master, we perish. And he, rising, rebuked the wind and the raging of the water; and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25And he said to them: Where is your faith? And they, fearing, wondered; saying one to another: Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him!
26And they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is over against Galilee. 27And when he had gone forth upon the land, there met him a certain man out of the city, who had demons a long time, and wore no clothing, and abode not in a house, but in the tombs. 28And seeing Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said: What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I beseech thee, do not torment me. 29For he commanded the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For of a long time it had seized him, and he was bound, being secured with chains and fetters; and bursting the bands, he was driven by the demon into the deserts.
30And Jesus asked him, saying: What is thy name? And he said, Legion; because many demons had entered into him. 31And he besought him that he would not command them to go away into the abyss. 32And there was a herd of many swine feeding in the mountain; and they besought him that he would permit them to enter into them. And he permitted them. 33And going out of the man, the demons entered into the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep into the lake, and were choked. 34And seeing what was done the herdsmen fled, and reported it in the city and in the country, 35And they went out to see what was done. And they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36They also who saw it reported to them how he that was possessed by demons was healed. 37And the whole multitude of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes besought him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear.
And he, entering into the ship, returned. 38And the man, out of whom the demons had gone, besought him that he might be with him. But he sent him away, saying: 39Return into thy house, and relate how great things God did for thee. And he departed, and published through the whole city how great things Jesus did for him.
