45And a certain one of the lawyers answering says to him: Teacher, in saying these things thou reproachest us also. 46And he said: Woe to you lawyers also! because ye load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

47Woe to you! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48So then ye bear witness to and approve the deeds of your fathers; because they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres[48]. 49Therefore also said the wisdom of God: I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will slay and persecute; 50that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, 51from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the temple. Verily I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.

52Woe to you lawyers! because ye took away the key of knowledge; ye entered not in yourselves, and those who were entering in ye hindered.

53And as he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things[53]; 54lying in wait for him, seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.

XII. In the mean time, the multitude having gathered together in tens of thousands, so that they trod one upon another, he began first to say to his disciples: Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed, nor hidden, that shall not be known. 3Wherefore, whatever ye said in the darkness, shall be heard in the light; and what ye spoke in the ear in closets, shall be proclaimed on the house-tops.

4And I say to you, my friends, be not afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5But I will warn you whom ye shall fear; fear him, who after he has killed has power to cast into hell; yea, I say to you, fear him. 6Are not five sparrows sold for two pence? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; ye are of more value than many sparrows.

8And I say to you: Every one that shall acknowledge me before men, him will the Son of man also acknowledge before the angels of God; 9but he that denied me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. 10And every one that shall speak a word against the Son of man, it will be forgiven him; but to him that blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven.

11And when they bring you to the synagogues, and magistrates, and authorities, take not thought how or what ye shall answer, or what ye shall say. 12For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what ye ought to say.

13And a certain one of the multitude said to him: Teacher, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. 14And he said to him: Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? 15And he said to them: Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; because a man's life consists not in the abundance of his possessions.

16And he spoke a parable to them, saying: The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully. 17And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have not where to store my fruits? 18And he said: This will I do; I will pull down my barns, and will build greater; and there I will store all my fruits and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. 20But God said to him: Fool! this night thy soul shall be required of thee; and whose shall those things be, which thou didst provide? 21So is he that lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
