A PARADOX
By the following simple method, a plausible attempt is made to prove that 1 is equal to 2:—
Suppose that a = b, then
| ab | = | a2 | |
| ∴ | ab - b2 | = | a2 - b2 |
| ∴ | b(a - b) | = | (a + b)(a - b) |
| ∴ b | = | a + b | |
| ∴ b | = | 2b | |
| ∴ 1 | = | 2 | |
This process only proves in reality that 0 × 1 = 0 × 2, which is true.
