“We all have hobbies,” says the author, and his is the collection of facts and figures. From his habit of noting down “bits of information about army organization, divisions, insignia, casualties, dates, awards of medals, and a dozen other subjects of interest to soldiers” (Foreword) grew this book, and its object is to “explain, in terms any civilian can understand, the system by which the American army accomplished its work in France.” Among its distinctive features are statistical tables, maps, charts, diagrams, collar insignia, officer’s insignia, chevrons and a large colored chart of the shoulder insignia of the United States army.
