The average man, says the author, becomes conscious of our industrial and economic system only when something has gone wrong. He goes through three stages: apathy, prejudice, knowledge. The object of the book is to serve the third stage and to find out what is really wrong. After reviewing the status of the various industries he arrives at the conclusion that the cleavage in society today is between the workers by hand and by brain on the one side and the rentiers and financiers on the other and that the function of industrial reconstruction consists in devising a policy by which the former can exercise their functions not on behalf of the latter but on behalf of the whole community.
