One of the chief actors is a mulatto girl whose “stigma” of blood makes life unbearable, so she ends it. “Equal educational and political advantages for black and white are urged, and from the text furnished in ‘a crimson-backed novel by a Baptist preacher’ the unequal standards obtaining in the South and all over the country are strongly arraigned. There is unquestioned truth in the representation, and it may be well to meet an appeal to public opinion in fiction by fiction.” (Outlook.)
