The author’s narrative covers two expeditions into remote parts of Algiers. “The first expedition extended into the Khabylie country, the mountain region close to the coast, and after that to Biskra, within the borders of the Sahara.... The second expedition was into the region called Petit Sahara, and the author was for a time the guest of the Khalifa of Roumania, Belcassem Ben Toumy by name, and a most genial and agreeable personage.” (N.
