The author was surgeon at Fortress Monroe during the time of Mr. Davis’ imprisonment, and the volume gives a full account of the “details and incidents of his captivity, particulars concerning his health and habits, together with many conversations on topics of great public interest.” Copies of the official reports sent by the author to the commanding officer, concerning the prisoner’s physical and mental condition are given in full.
