CHROMOSPHERE
Chro"mo*sphere, n. Etym: [Gr. sphere.] (Astron.)
Defn: An atmosphere of rare matter, composed principally of incandescent hydrogen gas, surrounding the sun and enveloping the photosphere. Portions of the chromosphere are here and there thrown up into enormous tongues of flame.
