Full oft some sweet or anguished face

Would part the leaves to seek his grace;

For many folk did wander there,

Both gleaming knights and dames most fair,

And o’er the level hedge and trim

Fair showed in quaint attire and slim

Of samite, broidery, and brocade,

As folk of passèd time portrayed

By cunning painters, skilled full well,

That mid so goodly sights did dwell.
