INTRODUCTION

This little collection is intended for colleges and secondary schools, and should serve as a graded course for several years. The pieces being printed in chronological order, the teacher will have to select the most appropriate to the knowledge of his classes.

The editor's aim in selecting these poems for memorizing, was to acquaint students with standard pieces of French literature, known by any educated Frenchman. At the same time, he has been careful to choose such poems as will be of greatest help in connection with prose writing and conversational French, supplying the memory with useful vocabulary, idioms and model sentences.
