Howarden Castle

Oct 2. 77.

Dear Sir

I am truly sorry that a short visit paid by me to London last week should have failed by a day or two to coincide with your stay there.

Sir James Lacaita assures me that you might not be indisposed to take the trouble of visiting me here.

This I could hardly have been bold enough to ask; but if he is right I shall deem it an honour and pleasure to see you on any day this week. Our stations are Chester 7 miles off, Brompton Hall & Queensferry each 2 ½ but with fewer opportunities. We dine at 8. You would I hope be able to stay at least for a night or two if you cannot be more liberal,

I remain dear Sir,
with high consideration
Faithfully yours
W Gladstone

I regret to have no company to offer you beyond members of my own family during this week.
