PREFACE
This collection of German idioms is presented in the hope that it will prove helpful to teachers and students of the language, and that it may contribute in a modest way toward making the sentence rather than the word the unit of treatment in the study and acquisition of the language. The German language is full of idioms, the meaning of which is poorly grasped by the student, because he never becomes liberated from the individual word.
The idioms have been compiled in large part from the Muret-Sanders Encyklopädisches Wörterbuch, from the Flügel-Schmidt-Tanger Wörterbuch der Englischen und Deutschen Sprache, and from Hetzel’s Wie der Deutsche spricht. Various considerations prohibit even an approach to completeness. The same considerations forbid the use in most instances of more than one English meaning, although many of the idioms, especially those of everyday conversation, have a variety of finely shaded meanings depending upon the connotation and intonation. Only occasional use has been made of the vast treasury of proverbs and popular quotations in the language. The alphabetical arrangement according to key-words, while open to objections, presents itself on the whole as the most practicable.

Er ist abgeblitzt.
He was rebuffed.
Er brach kurz ab.
He stopped short.
Sie sitzen noch auf der ABC-bank.
They are still beginners.
Es drückt mir das Herz ab.
It breaks my heart.
Es ist noch nicht aller Tage Abend.
Don’t crow too soon. He laughs best who laughs last.
Es ist ein Aber dabei.
There is a but in the matter.
So lasse ich mich nicht abfertigen.
I will not be put off like this.
Ich gebe mich nicht mit solchen Leuten ab.
I have nothing to do with such people.
Der Brief ist mir abhanden gekommen.
I have mislaid (lost) the letter.

Er schrie Ach und Weh.

This day week is Christmas.
Sie haben ihn zur Ader gelassen.
They have bled him.
Es ist keine gute Ader an ihm. (Cf. Es ist kein gutes Haar an ihm. Es ist kein guter Faden an ihm).
He is absolutely worthless.
Er hat sich einen Affen gekauft.
He has a jag on.
Er sieht sich nicht mehr ähnlich.
He is not like the same person.
Die Suppe (Butter) ist alle.
There is no more soup (butter).
Er kam in aller Frühe.
He came very early in the morning.
Es ist mir alles eins. (Cf. Es ist mir einerlei. Das ist mir Wurst).
It is all the same to me.
Sie ist allerliebst.
She is most charming.
Sie wollen also nicht?
You won’t, eh?
Es bleibt beim Alten.
Things remain as they were.
Man sieht ihm sein Alter nicht an.
He does not look his age.
Er ist im schönsten Alter. (Cf. Sie sind noch in Ihren besten Jahren).
He is in his best years.
Vor alters war das anders.
In olden times it was different.
Am wenigsten sollte man lügen.
Least of all should one lie.
Tue, was deines Amtes ist.
Do your duty.
Das ist nicht meines Amtes.
That is no concern of mine.
Von jetzt an muß es anders gehen.
From this day forth things must go differently.

There is a love affair beginning.
Der hat sich einen Bären angebunden.
He has run into debt.
Er ist kurz angebunden.
He is blunt (gruff).

Was du nicht willst, das man dir tu’, das füg’ auch keinem andern zu.

Ich kann mit ihm nichts anfangen.

Man weiß nicht, wo man ihn anfassen soll.
He is a difficult man to deal with.

Der läßt sich nicht so leicht anführen.

She has no breeding.
Das steht mir nicht an.
