RETURNED HIRE PIANOS AT REDUCED PRICES.
In consequence of the extensive hiring business done by Harrods, it is possible to offer at most times a wonderful range of instruments which have had, as a rule, only slight use.
These comprise models by the most famous makers, and having been on hire only to the best houses are for all practical purposes as useful as new instruments.
Harrods cordially invite correspondence from clients unable to visit the stores, and if customers will kindly indicate their wishes regarding style and price, suggestions and advice will be gladly submitted.
Hints on the Proper Care of a Piano.
In order to assist those who are anxious to preserve the quality, tone, touch, and appearance of their Pianofortes, and obtain the utmost pleasure from them, HARRODS respectfully submit the following suggestions:—
Damp is the greatest enemy of a Piano. The instrument should never be kept in a lower temperature than 60 degrees Fahr. Extreme heat is also injurious. Pianos should not be placed in a direct draught—against the outside wall—adjacent to a window or conservatory, or very near a fire, unless well protected. Should any noise or jarring sound be heard when a Piano is played, it is advisable to ascertain the cause before condemning the instrument. Often it is found to arise from a loose key or candle bracket, or possibly some hard substance dropped inside, or by some adjacent ornaments which sound in sympathy with certain chords and notes. Pianos should be dusted with a soft cloth, and finished with a dry chamois leather to keep the polish bright. Any dulness of polish due to natural oils working through the wood can easily be removed, if attended to at once.
It is important that all Pianos should be regularly tuned and attended to, whether in constant use or not, by competent tuners.

PIPE ORGANS: Estimates and Specifications submitted for Pipe Organs for all purposes, Expert advice given.
“ST. CECILIA” PIPE ORGANS.
The Tone is produced, exclusively, from full-scale Organ Pipes of the finest quality which are the same as used in the largest Two and Three-Manual Church Organs. The ST. Cecilia Organ is built in several models, but the smallest pattern is far superior to the largest and most costly “American” Reed Organ or Harmonium. It possesses much more variety of tone and also greater carrying power; for blending with and supporting the voice it is unequalled.
The ingenious Pneumatic Action introduced enables the “double bass” stop to give a Pedal Organ effect, actuating from the Manual. On this stop only the lowest note held in a Bass chord is sounded, thus it removes the difficulty of using the Pedals, while preserving the effect, and a perfect 16-feet Pedal Bass is obtained. For those that prefer a Pedal Board, special Models are manufactured.
Cash Prices, from £50.
Specifications furnished on application.
“ST. CECILIA” ORGANS WITH ORGANOLA.
The “ORGANOLA”
is a substitute for the most skilled fingers, and will enable anyone old or young to play the Organ with the expression and technique of an accomplished musician, even though never having played an organ before. Extra cost fitted into St. Cecilia Organs £38 10 0
THE “POSITIVE” PIPE ORGAN.
FOR CHURCH, HOME AND SCHOOL.
The “Positive” Organ—an entirely British invention and production—was originally designed as a real Organ to replace the Reed Instruments hitherto commonly in use in Village Churches, Mission Rooms, etc. Real Organ Pipes alone are used to produce the tone. A skilled organist is not required, since, from its single keyboard, anyone who can play a Harmonium correctly can obtain perfectly the absolute effect of a Two-Manual and Pedal Organ, and can also transpose.
The precise effect of skilful pedalling is obtained by A Patent Pedal-Bass Stop, which plays in the 16 ft. tone the lowest note only of any chord or succession of chords. The effect of a second manual is obtained by Patent Melodic Solo Stops, whereby the melody of a hymn or voluntary is made to stand out above the accompaniment. To obtain these effects no special skill is necessary. The Transposer enables the pitch of a tune to be changed to bring the music within the reach of the singer or congregation. The “Positive” Organ can easily be blown by the feet or by a hand-blower. The “Positive” Organ occupies no more floor-space than a Harmonium.
