The little troupe traveled through a better country. The weather was bad on the road, but it was still worse on the hills. Remi's sadness increased when they left the city of Cette, for he loved Madam Milligan and Arthur.

They walked a long time without accident. Capi was certainly the best dog of the troupe; he obeyed his master much better than the others. Everybody thought that Joli-Cœur was the worst; in reality, he was not as bad as Zerbino.
