AMERICAN THREAD “AUNT LYDIA’S” HEAVY RUG YARN
9 (10, 11)—70 yd. skeins White

1 Pr. Knitting Needles No. 10 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE BELOW

GAUGE: 3 sts = 1 inch

Directions are given for small size (10-12). Changes for medium (14-16) and large (18-20) sizes are given in parentheses.

MEASUREMENTS: Width across back at underarm: 16″, 18″, 20″. Width across each front at underarm: 9″, 10″, 11″.

BACK: Cast on 49 (55, 61) sts. 1st ROW: K 3, P 1, * K 5, P 1, repeat from * across row ending K 3. 2nd ROW: P 3, K 1, * P 5, K 1, repeat from * across row ending P 3. 3rd ROW: Repeat 1st row. 4th ROW: P 3, * drop next st down 3 rows, insert needle in st and under strands, pulling loop up in front of strands to level of row being worked, K the st, P 5, repeat from * across row ending last repeat with P 3. 5th ROW: Repeat 1st row. 6th ROW: P across row. Repeat these 6 rows for pattern. Work in pattern until back measures 19 inches from beg ending with 6th pattern row. SHAPE ARMHOLES: NEXT 2 ROWS: Bind off 6 sts at beg of each row (all sizes). Then dec 1 st at beg and end of every other row 3 times (all sizes). Work even in pattern until armholes measure 7½ (7½, 8) inches from 1st bind off ending with 5th pattern row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS: NEXT 4 ROWS: Bind off 5 sts at beg of each row (all sizes). Bind off remaining sts in pattern.
