33. MURRAY, John Nesbitt, Esq.
Eld. s. of late James Murray, Esq., of Philiphaugh, by Mary Dale, dau. of Henry Hughes, Esq., of Worcester. Is chief of the numerous and powerful clan of the Murrays of the south of Scotland. His family held landed possessions in that country prior to the twelfth century, from which time these have descended in unbroken succession to himself. Among his ancestors we find many men of great note, including the famous “outlaw Murray,” of the time of James IV. (see Sir Walter Scott’s “Border Minstrelsy”). B. 1817; m. 1840, Rosemary, only dau. and heir of William Andrew Nesbitt, Esq., (assuming thereupon the name of Nesbitt); and has two sons and one dau.
