Stupňování přídavných jmen.—Comparison of Adjectives.

In the comparison of objects we use in Bohemian as well as in English three different forms: První stupeň—Positive—silný—strong; druhý stupeň—Comparative—silnější—stronger; třetí stupeň—Superlative—nejsilnější—strongest.

In Bohemian the comparative is normally formed by adding the suffix—ější to the positive.

The superlative is always formed by adding the suffix nej—most—to the comparative.

I.II.III.
pilný
(diligent)
pilnější
(more diligent)
nejpilnější
(most diligent)
severní
(northerly)
severnější
(more northerly)
nejsevernější
(most northerly)

From what has been said on the nature of ě, it follows that the hard stem consonant will be softened by the ending ější.

Before s, l, z, ě changes into e.

The comparative ending is often shortened; “ej” is left out and only “ší” is added.
