P. 375. Add. 28,421, 10: The date of this letter of the Duke of Villahermosa to Philip II. must necessarily be 1585, and not 1565, as printed, for in this year Portugal had not yet been amalgamated with Spain.
P. 380. Add. 28,702, 24: instead of Juan Gonçalez r. “Idiaquez.”
P. 381. ” ” 40: the same error as above (p. 388) r. “Idiaquez.”
P. 383. ” ” 61 (l. 4): del Consejo de Estado add “y Guerra de S. M.”
P. 393. Add. 28,385, 92 (l. 6): que como no la puede tener se caen r. “se le caen las armas.”
P. 414. Add. 28,384, 6 (l. 2): the date 1413 must be a mistake, for Æneas Silvio Piccolomini, born in 1405, did not become a cardinal until 1456, nor was he elected Pope, as Pius II., till the 19th of August, 1458. He died at Ancona on the 24th of August, 1464, when he was about to embark on an expedition against the Turks. Considering that his predecessor Calixtus III. (Alfonso Borgia) filled St. Peter’s chair from 1456 to 1458, Silvio’s oration, which is not to be found in his collected works, must have been delivered at Rome in 1457.
P. 418. Add. 20,643, 2 (l. 2): Gaetano Ma. Bran. r. “Gaetano Maria Brancone.”
P. 422. Add. 25,687, 1: the date of the instructions to the Duke of Frias (Don Juan Fernandez de Velasco), as governor of Milan, is evidently wrong, for the Duke was not appointed to that post till 1612, after the death of the Count of Fuentes.
P. 423. ” ” (l. 2): 1692 is again a mistake for “1612.”
” ” ”12: by his father the Emperor r. by “his grandfather the Emperor,” since Philip III. was the son of Philip II. and the grandson of Charles the Emperor.
