He was in charge of the fortress of Tarifa, as lieutenant of Sancho IV. of Castile, when the place was attacked by Don Juan, the King’s rebellious brother. Unless the fortress were delivered over to him, Don Juan threatened to slay Guzmán’s son, then in his power, before the eyes of the father. Honor and fealty prevailed in Guzmán and he witnessed the murder of his son rather than surrender his trust.
